College of High Magic

Members List

Magic is a rarity in the Yeomanry, and those people who learn how to hone it effectively are even more rare. In most cases, magic in the Yeomanry is learned through a traditional master-apprentice relationship. However, during the last half-century, the high elves of Loftwick, with the help of Theodain Eriason, have tried to create a more organized center for magical learning. With the blessing of the Yeoman government, the College of High Magic was created and attached to the thriving University system in Loftwick in 560 CY.

Although it is a small school, it is the predominant organized association of arcane casters in the Yeomanry. It attracts magic-users from all reaches of the Yeomanry and from all schools of magical thought. Furthermore, there are a small number of sub-organizations that work within the confines of the College, from the Guardians and Enforcers who protect the integrity and secrets of the College to the mysterious Shrouded Circle whom few know anything about.

The College is led by a small group called the Council. It is the Council who determines what the goals and objectives the College will pursue at any given time. They also attempt to keep some kind of control over magic, in all its forms, in the Yeomanry. For this reason they sometimes are at odds with the Council of Common Grosspokesmen, and many suspect Theodain to be behind this rift to some extent. The leader of the council, and Headmaster of the College, is simply known as Fain. Fain is a respected elven wizard in the Yeomanry, rumored to be second in magical ability, only to Theodain himself. He also is rumored to clearly be in Theodain's court on most political issues.

Newly-admitted members of the College are called Initiates. Initiates are charged with learning the basic intricacies associated with arcane magic. Initiates are also expected to choose a specialty based on their skills and interests. There are two primary specialties that can be chosen:

  • Mage: A Mage concentrates on arcane magic as the primary focus of their power and being.

  • Guardian: A Guardian has chosen to use their magical talent to augment other skills.

After one year of service in the College, the Initiate title is dropped and a member is referred to as either Mage or Guardian, depending upon their specialty.

Prerequisites

  • A character must hail from the Yeomanry. An Initiate in the College of Magic must have been a student in good standing at the University at Loftwick for at least one calendar year before gaining admission to the College. Switching regions from the Yeomanry results in expulsion from the group and all the benefits that come with it.

  • An Initiate must have the ability to cast Arcane spells.

  • The PC must have been created with the Yeomanry as their home region and must still be as such.

  • An Initiate must have at least 4 ranks in Spellcraft and 4 ranks in Knowledge: Arcana.

Requirements

  • Study in the College of High Magic is much more vigorous than in the general University at Loftwick. Members must spend a minimum of 8 TUs per calendar year in study at the College. Further TUs may be spent if a PC wishes to acquire new spells found in the Builder Books. See below for more detail.

  • Initiates must also pay a tuition of 800gp per year.

  • Those following the Mage path must pay a further 4 TUs and 400gp per year to represent their total dedication to the academics of magic.

Benefits

  • Members of the College of High Magic are a fairly close-knit group. The DC for determining if a desired Arcane spell is available to a PC is reduced by 4, and the gp cost of such spells is reduced by 20%. Furthermore, each full year spent as a member of the College counts as one permanent Influence Point towards purchasing arcane spells at the College. For example, a 3-year veteran of the College would have the equivalent of 3 permanent Influence Points and could receive up to 6th-level spells for only gold and TU cost.

  • Members of the College may purchase, at normal cost, any scroll that an arcane caster of their equivalent level can already cast. So, for example, a 7th-level wizard could not purchase a cone of cold scroll, while a 9th-level wizard could. A student may only purchase Builder Book spells (see below) that they are granted access to. However, learning these Builder Book spells costs an additional 1 TU and 100gp per spell.
